We live for today like the characters in Sex and the City appparently

Apparently women in the North West aged between 25 and 45 live for today like our very own Carrie, Sam, Charlotte and Miranda.

Research shows The Sex and the City generation in the North West lives by the mantra of seizing the day and damning the consequences for tomorrow. Almost a three in 10 (27 per cent) of women living in the North West aged 25 to 45 claim that they...

...live for the day and don’t like to think about the future.

Friends Provident did the research and their report, which they called The Sex and the City Generation: Fashionistas not Cashonistas, says women in the NW don't differ wildly from Carrie Bradshaw, Samantha Jones et al, with a love of instant gratification and material goods.

Almost a quarter (23 per cent) of women aged 25 to 45 in the North West are the proud owners of least 30 pairs of shoes and a fifth (22 per cent) confesses to sacrificing lunch and hoarding their sandwich money in order to afford to boost that collection even further.

In the pursuit of making the most of the here and now, over a third (35 per cent) of women questioned in the North West admits to spending more than £50 per month or more on clothes, almost three in 10 (29 per cent) pays out over £20 per month on cosmetics alone, and over one in six (17 per cent) splurge more than £200 per year on beauty treatments.

And showing where their priorities lie, 17 per cent of the North West women say their social life and spending time with their friends is most important to them, more so than meeting their ‘Mr Big’ (10 per cent), financial solvency (four per cent), or work (three per cent). carriebig.jpg

While splashing their cash on a day-to-day basis, the North West’s Sex and the City generation is actively trying to avoid the future – nearly a quarter (23 per cent) admit they worry about getting old.

Many are flocking to anti-ageing treatments to turn back the hands of time, with more than one in four (28 per cent) women questioned in the North West opting to use anti-ageing cosmetics and body treatments. And they’re starting young, a quarter (25 per cent) of 25-30-year-olds in the UK have turned to anti-ageing products or exercise, partially in order “to look younger”.

William Higham, author of the report and founder of Next Big Thing, said: “One emerging ‘anti-ageing’ trend for women is to go out with a younger man. While it may not make ladies look younger, for many the Samantha Jones approach to dating helps make them feel younger. Figures show that 10,000 women every year marry men at least eight years their junior.”

Christine O’Grady, senior media relations executive at Friends Provident, said: “Living for the day is all well and good, but it does pay to have one eye on the future.
"Lotions, potions and surgery may slow the signs of ageing, but growing old happens to us all and it’s better to prepare for this inevitability. Our research found that women in the North West would willingly sacrifice lunch, a night out with friends, or hoard loose change to fund a pair of new shoes, but perhaps a few pairs of painful new shoes could be sacrificed each year to boost their savings for a comfortable retirement.”

The research also revealed that UK women are not always clever with their cash, as four in 10 (42 per cent) of women questioned in the North West save less than £200 a year and more than half (53 per cent) save less than £500 a year. In addition to this, more women own a car (68 per cent) than a have a savings account (60 per cent). And more women have a bumper collection of shoes (23 per cent) as they have life or health insurance (20 per cent).
